ClubBuzz: 2020 Westpoint Harbor Boat Lighting Competition Winners

Season’s Greetings and
Holiday Boat Lighting Winners

Member News.

Members Sonya Boggs, Paul Kettle, Greg Smedsrud, and Sue Martinson have set sail for Hawai’i. Their journey will take a few weeks. We’re hoping to get a weekly update from them to share in The Buzz as they make their way across the Pacific.

Members Barb Deméré and Judy Hyrne were asked by the harbormasters to be judges in this year’s boat lighting competition.

Boat Lighting Winners
The harbor members have provided some deserved holiday cheer this year with a spectacular arrangement of seasonal displays. Clearly, everyone decided this year needed some special effort and they have created some of the all-time best-decorated boats.

Thank you to everyone who put it so much effort and showed so much creativity. In addition to the three prizes and one grand prize winner, as usual, the judges awarded several honorable mentions.

The 2020 Dock of the Year was a very close fought competition between D-Dock and H-Dock. D-Dock have been past years winners and have the advantage of being one of the longest docks in the marina. The boats on D-Dock represented all that is classic and elegant. In the end though, the judges selected H-Dock for the sheer intensity and overall majesty.

This year there were many honorable mentions from the sublime classy and elegant decorations to the wildly inventive to the just plain abounding spirit of the season.

Grand Prize Winner
When one thinks of this time of year what comes to mind? Tuva has everything you are thinking about right now. This a childhood dream made complete with a working train, a jolly Santa, and happy tunes circling the dock all beautifully framed as only sailboats can.

The snowflakes that hang everywhere are homemade by the kids aboard and have been saved from year to year.

The grand prize this year is an inflatable stand up paddleboard.

Congratulations to the Atencio family.

And the three runners up. Prizes for the runners up are hand-held marine VHF radios

The jewel of C-Dock is Pelagic. A wonderful multi-media, multi-texture, mélange of holiday sensations. From the ship’s cat, with jaunty antlers, to the holiday greenery festooned along the rails and the wheelhouse, to the crew in jolly attire, and, not forgetting the astounding hot-toddy. A huge amount of work and beautifully executed.

The highlight of E-Dock, famous for its parties, was the beautifully decorated Aria. Even though the party was in full swing everyone came out to greet the judges and engage in some seasonal banter.

Despite a half-point deduction for untrimmed zip ties they were a clear winner.

Attention to detail always gets the judge’s attention. Juno is a magical cornucopia of wonder and wackiness. From the only internally illuminated anchor to the wistful

patterns on the roof, to the marvelously mad snowman and weirdly svelte Santa. But the pièce de resistance is the tiny holiday scenes all around the inside.

Do take a moment to look at the boats this year. It is a delightful walk and it is full of surprises.

Huge thanks to Judy and Barb for being our judges this year.

If you any questions please let me know.
