Christening of Beetle Cat Evelyn
Please join Winston & Carole Bumpus for a traditional boat christening by Larry Mayne this Saturday at 5:00 pm at the fuel dock. There will be champagne, music, and shenanigans.

Winston purchased a 1969 Concordia-built Beetle Cat, named Evelyn, berthed in Santa Cruz. It had been restored by the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, Rhode Island in 2000. In March Winston hauled her out proceeded to restore her from top to bottom with the help of Larry Mayne and Jim Turner.

This year will make it a hundred years of building Beetle Cats.

From the Beetle Cat Class Association website: The Beetle Cat, a 12-foot, gaff-rigged plank-on-frame sailboat, was initially built by whaleboat builder John Beetle in 1921 so that his kids could learn to sail.

The little craft’s popularity with yachting clubs and summer camps has passed down through generations of families including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Steven Spielberg, Calvin Klein, and Senator John Kerry. The boat continues to be hand-crafted using traditional methods to preserve the integrity and quality of the boat.

Over 4,000 Beetle Cats have been built since 1921.
