Building Update – Monday, December 6th

This weekend we had a delightful “New Member Open House” and I had the chance to take some members out to the site to see for themselves how the work is progressing. Thanks to everyone who stopped by, said “hi” and to everyone who helped out.

On the tour, it was wonderful to see that the planting is already completed along the very important bioswales. Bioswales are vegetated, shallow, landscaped depressions designed to capture, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff as it moves downstream. Bioswales are the most effective type of green infrastructure facility in slowing runoff velocity and cleansing water while recharging the underlying groundwater table.

If you notice the road and the parking area slope away from the harbor. Any rainwater will run off into the bioswale that will clean it before allowing it to return to the Bay. Part of the project here at Westpoint is to plant a number of native species along the swale that are both decorative and a functional part of the cleaning process.

The other news is that the Civil Engineers on the project have now staked out the foundations. It is the first chance to see the building’s footprint.

John Vandemoer will be speaking about his book, “Rigged Justice” to members and guests.

The former Stanford University sailing coach sentenced in the Varsity Blues college admissions scandal tells the riveting true story of how he was drawn unwittingly into a web of deceit in this eye-opening memoir that offers a damning portrait of modern college administration and the ways in which justice and fairness do not always intersect. – Google Books review.
