Speaker Series: Cruising the Inside Passage
Friday, January 27th, 6:00 pm – Clubhouse and Zoom

Members Jeff Birdwell and Holly Winnen will take us on their adventure cruising “Teak and Holly” up and back through the Inside Passage to Glacier Bay, Sitka, and Juneau. The beauty, vastness, and wildness of this area are almost indescribable. Every day offered something new to see and do. From navigating currents in the narrows, maneuvering through walls of crab pots, 25-foot tidal changes in 6 hours, and an array of wildlife (whales, seals, eagles, otters, and BEARS oh my). Not to mention icebergs, growlers, and baby bits. And yes we caught many fish, crabs, and prawns along the way. As boat owners of less than a year when we started the cruise we learned so much! We would love to share some of the highlights from our fantastic journey with you.

This event will be catered. Meal tickets will be $25 pp.

Zoom link will be posted next week.

The Club Chronicles: chapter 4
Gume is “The Man”
by Neal Doten

If your Spanish is a bit “challenged” as mine is, then here’s some help.  Gume (GOO-may) is his first name (never did get his last name). He’s the mobile “el hombre de las frutas y verduras” (the fruit and vegetables man). Please note that the Spanish in italics are my best efforts and not necessarily grammatically correct.

Gume could be found every M-W-F at 0730 in the parking lot next to the bridge to Isla Marina (Mazatlan).

It would be an “early get-up” on any day when I needed to shop for green groceries. If not fully awake when leaving the boat, I would definitely be awake at the end of the brief hike over the bridge to the parking lot. The advantage to arriving at 0730 was that I had the pick of the best produce before anyone else.

Typically, I would greet Gume (“buenos dias, amigo”) and ask for a plastic bag (“necessito un bolsa de plastico, por favor”). I would repeat that request as needed since each fruit or vegetable would be weighed — that bag set aside until I was done shopping. As you can see in the photo, he had a great selection of the best produce that he could find.

When I was done (“no necessito mas”), he would weigh each bag and then tell me the total cost in pesos. There was no need to bargain with him, because his prices were better than those in the Walmart store about a mile away. I know. I did some cost comparison. His produce was fresher and better quality!

This was years ago, but I’d like to think that Gume is still “The Man.”
